In
January 2003, I decided that I needed to do something about the
weight I had gained. I realized that there were so many things in
life that I was missing because of the extra weight I was carrying
around. I love to travel and I found that I would avoid flying in
a plane at almost any cost. I was afraid the seat belt would no
longer fit me and if it did, I didn't want to encroach on the passenger's
space next to me. Basically, I was missing out on everyday activities
because at 317 pounds it is hard to do most anything.
In
February or March of 2003 I was given information about the Lap
Band surgery from a friend. I researched it very thoroughly on the
Internet and decided it was the surgery for me.
August 4, 2003: I had Lap Band surgery today. I weighed in at 317.2
pounds. I was a little nervous this morning but I knew that I was
in good hands. I was a little nauseated when I woke up in the Recovery
Room and had a little abdominal pain but that quickly subsided with
medicine they gave me. I was very tired most of the day. I had trouble
keeping my eyes open. I did have some back pain later in the day,
but the pain medicine I was prescribed helped me.
August 8, 2003: I weighed in today and I have lost 10 pounds. I
am so happy. I almost couldn't believe that I had lost 10 pounds
in one week. I can honestly say that I have never lost 10 pounds
in one week before. I have been on a clear liquid diet since the
surgery. I am shocked that I am not hungry. I am not sure what happens,
but I was put to sleep on Monday, had the surgery and have not been
hungry since. I am totally amazed. I feel like I have definitely
made the right decision in having the lap band surgery.
August 22, 2003: I am in my 3rd week after surgery and I feel great.
I have been eating a full liquid diet. This consists of mainly yogurt
(without fruit pieces), cream soups (strained) and any liquid that
is not carbonated. My energy has come back completely. I went back
to work on August 11th. I weighed in today and I have lost 18.0
pounds. It is so wonderful to be able to get on the scale and actually
see it go down instead of up. I am advancing to a soft solid diet
today.
September 12, 2003: I am in my 6th week after surgery. I weighed
in today and have lost 24.7 pounds. It is hard to describe how wonderful
I feel. This is the first time in my life where I feel I will not
fail at losing weight this time. As each week passes, the pounds
keep coming off and I feel so proud of myself and the decision I
made to have the Lap Band surgery. I am advancing to full solid
food today. It will be interesting to see what I can and cannot
tolerate.
October 17, 2003: I am 11 weeks post op and I have lost 31.2 pounds.
I am working out at least 3 times a week. The treadmill seems to
be getting a little easier and I am actually looking forward to
going to the gym. I never thought I would hear those words come
out of my mouth. I feel great. I am flying to Las Vegas next week.
I am still a little worried about the seat belt fitting but I have
much more energy than I did 11 weeks ago and I feel like this is
going to be a really fun trip.
October 31, 2003: I have lost 36.1 pounds and I am 13 weeks post
op. I just got back from Las Vegas and I still managed to lose weight.
What a great feeling. I feel that my whole Lap Band experience has
been wonderful. I can eat basically anything I want to. I just can
no longer eat the amounts I used to. I do not feel like I am missing
out on anything.
