START TRAINING TODAY!

If you are interested in walking your first 5K race, here are some training tips…

Start walking 15 minutes per day for 5 days at an easy pace.  Gradually increase your time by 5 minutes per day until you are comfortably walking up to 30 minutes at a time.  Each week, walk 5 days with 1 day of a long walk (equaling at least 40 minutes and up to 60).  Each week notice a faster pace, easier breathing, and improved form.  You are now ready for your race.

Another great local training tip AND a wonderful way to get outside and exercise…

Walk the 5th Ave Causeway.  If you park your car at the Front St. boat launch and walk across the causeway to Douglas Park, it is 1.7 miles.  You will get your heart rate up, increase your strength and endurance and get to see a beautiful view while doing it.  If you are just starting to exercise – walk up to the top of the causeway and then return back down.  Continue increasing the distance until you have completed the entire distance.  If you are up for a challenge, try running.  Enjoy!

When it comes to exercise – it is easy to say we want to, or know we should, however, it is very difficult to actually make it happen. The laws of motion are against us and will fight with us every step of the way. If we wait for the right time to start – the right time will never come. We have to make it happen. We wouldn’t miss work and still expect to get a paycheck, so why do we skip out on exercise and still expect a good quality of life? Hard work pays off, and your body will thank you for making it move. Your stress levels will be decreased, your strength and flexibility will be increased, and your overall quality of life will be much greater. Start now, MAKE the time and get moving. After all…Aren’t you worth it?
