Dr. Mark A. Fusco, of LifeShape Advanced Bariatric Center of Florida, First Surgeon in Florida to Use EndoFLIP® in Gastric Band Surgery

Dr. Mark A. Fusco, founder of LifeShape Advanced Bariatric Center of Florida, is among the first surgeons in the United States to train to use the EndoFLIP® system, and is the first surgeon in Florida to purchase and use the innovative device for his patients.  The EndoFLIP® is used by Dr. Fusco both in the Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric band surgery, and in a new weight loss procedure known as gastric plication. Dr. Fusco is also among the first surgeons in Florida to have performed gastric plication.

“With the EndoFLIP® device we can accurately tighten the band at the time of the patients surgery potentially improving the patients early weight loss. I am very excited to use this device to assist my patients in maximizing the success of their weight loss surgery,” stated Dr. Fusco.

Dr. Fusco has performed over 800 gastric band surgeries and is considered a leader in the field of weight loss surgery. In adjustable gastric banding, a band is placed around the upper stomach, narrowing the passageway through which food passes and limiting the amount a person can consume. This band, which is adjustable, when tightened to the correct size, decreases hunger and allows patients to comfortably eat less. The process of adjusting the band, in the past, has been to slowly increase the tightness of the band over weeks. The gastric plication procedure involves folding the stomach in on itself creating a pleat in the stomach to decrease the size of the stomach thereby assisting in decreasing food volume. “The EndoFlip is critical in confirming that the internal diameter of the stomach is small enough for weight loss, yet not too small to allow for comfortable eating,” added Dr. Fusco.

The EndoFLIP® Device received FDA Approval for U.S. market release in 2010.

As many LifeShape patients know, Dr. Mark A. Fusco and the LifeShape team are committed to Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric band as it remains the safest, least invasive weight loss solution for patients that choose to undergo weight loss surgery. With hundreds of thousands procedures performed worldwide, hundreds of scientific studies confirming its efficacy and safety, the Lap-Band is firmly established as an excellent option to help patients improve their health. Dr. Fusco began LifeShape over eight years ago. Over the years, Dr. Fusco and his team have made numerous improvements to the LifeShape program in an attempt to perfectly tailor the program to meet the needs of Lap-Band patient’s in order to maximize their success. Occasionally, for various anatomic reasons, patients are not able to have a band. Or occasionally a band must be removed.  In the past, for this unfortunate minority of patients, subsequent surgical options include gastric bypass, or gastric sleeve resection. Both these operations involve cutting into the stomach, which in a small percentage of patients leads to life threatening intestinal leaks.  In an attempt to decrease the risk of these serious leaks a new procedure has been developed called gastric plication. Gastric plication, also called the gastric pleat, involves folding the stomach into itself to reduce the size of the stomach.

The idea of this procedure is that by decreasing the size of the stomach, patients feel full earlier and have less hunger making it easier to loose weight. Like the band, the procedure is done as an outpatient using minimally invasive techniques. Because of the newness of the procedure there is very limited long-term weight loss data.  The short-term two year weight loss is comparable to gastric sleeve.  Unlike the band, the gastric plication procedure and the sleeve are NOT adjustable.
